It’s YOUR Kindness

Your, therefore have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things.  Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth.  So when you, a mere human being, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment?  Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance? Romans 2:1-4

It appears that the culture we are living in is becoming more and more judgmental.  The national focus is on if you don’t agree with someone you’re judged as a bigot, a racist, and even more radical is a homophobe. This is understandable behavior of those without Christ, but for those of us who claim Christ as our Lord and Savior it is ultimately forbidden.  Jesus said in reference to Matthew 7:1 “Do not judge, or you too will be judged.”  Luke 6:37 says, “Do not judge, and you will not be judged.  Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned.  Forgive and you will be forgiven.”

Paul states it clearly that we as mere human beings do not have the capacity of understanding to pass any kind of impartial judgment and that if we do we too will be judged and I believe even more severely.  Yet we judge every single day.  When we voice our opinion of someone, when we look “down our nose” at someone who is “different” than we are, and especially when we have been wronged, abused, or hurt by someone.  I believe judging is a huge part of our sinful nature and one that goes unchecked, unconfessed, and unchanged.  God tells us to discern what is good or evil and to do good, to love our enemies and to treat those who mistreat us with kindness and love.

I have been under conviction for the act of judgment of my own.  Jesus told His followers that the second greatest commandment is to love one another.  He did not place specifics such as love others that are just like you, believe like you, look like you, dress like you, think like you, etc. Jesus said, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it:  Love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 22:37-39 

What if your neighbor is your enemy?  To attempt to answer this question, let’s define two nouns, ‘neighbor’ and ‘enemy’.   Is neighbor that person who lives next door?  Literally the answer is yes, but neighbor is figuratively anyone you and I come in contact with, friends, acquaintances, co-workers, family, people you go to church with, even those people we pass on any given day that we may never see again. An enemy is a person who is actively opposed or hostile to someone or something.  While enemies can become hostile pretty quickly for this thought process I want to focus on the ‘opposed’.  As Christians we face opposition all around us.  Jesus said that because of Him we will face opposition, we will face persecution.  So why are we so surprised when it happens?  What’s worse why are we so unprepared that we immediately go into combative judgmental mode instead of love and treating the opposition with kindness? 

Unfortunately for some it takes a sin or opposition to hit close to home before we understand what Jesus taught us that the only way to lead others to the truth is with love and kindness.  This will take patience, because love and kindness will be challenged by the behavior of the opposition.  To tell someone off is an immediate reactive solution, it may make us feel good at the time, but it does not lead that opposition to Jesus.  It’s an egotistical move that glorifies self not God.  Jesus, throughout His life and death had one goal in which He met and that was to bring glory to God, by making a way for anyone to be reconciled to God.

I confess that I am consistently guilty of this sin of judgment and combative nature to prove my agenda, but when I look closely at the Word, such as Romans 2, I was not called to judge and am reminded that I will be judged for all my sin, now that I am a Christian, it will be the sins of my words and deeds, what I have done or not done for the cause of Christ.  Because of Jesus I will not face the sin of death, but He will ask me what did I do for Him. Do I love with a pure heart?  Do I give with a pure heart?  Do I live a life in my attitude, actions, and thoughts that is pleasing to God the Father? 

Matthew 7 goes on to say this about judging… “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?” Matthew 7:3  This means we can’t judge or even help someone else until we first look at what we do and stop what we do wrong.  Get the obstacle of whatever sin is in our own life out so that we can in love and empathy help others to do the same.  Jesus is the only sinless man who ever lived.  So why do we think just because we are “Christians” we have any right to judge others.  Sin is sin and Christ died for all sin so that we might live.

Others will only come to that knowledge by how they see you and I live.  Father, forgive me for my sin of arrogance and ignorance that has driven me to judgment.  Let us walk in love and forgiveness with each other and especially to those who may oppose us.  Help us remember that it is Your kindness manifested through us, the body of Christ, that leads to repentance.

Blessings crown the head of the righteous…Proverbs 10:6

I remember a song growing up in church that was sung often in the “song service” on Sunday morning.  “Count Your Blessings.”  I can still hear my mother’s voice singing that song.  Her voice was beautiful.  As a child when I heard that song, I didn’t understand the words, “when upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed,” but I did understand blessings, except I didn’t get that it is “upon the billows of life” that we are given blessings of the greatest value.

Some people have the illusion that the Christian life is paradise, once you become a Christian no more pain, no more struggle, life is supposed to become easy street, Jesus did say that He came to give life more abundant.  Quickly that illusion turns to reality and the bills don’t get magically paid, relationships go through trials, sickness and death still come.  Bad things still happen to good people. 

The abundance Jesus promised us was not the wealth and prosperity of this world, but that through anything God’s blessings would prevail over whatever this world would try to do to us. 

This is why Paul wrote in his letter to the church of Colosse, (while he was in prison) “Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things.  For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.  When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.” Colossians 3:2-4  We are such now thinkers this instruction is so hard to follow.  We do not know how to think on things above, what God has for us no one can even begin to imagine.  But that is no excuse.  Paul also told us that we walk by faith not by sight.  “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived” –the things God has prepared for those who love Him. These are the things God has revealed to us by His Spirit. 1Corinthians 2:9-10

You know that nagging feeling that sometimes comes to the surface of our thoughts that says, there has to be something more, that empty feeling that nothing you try fills that void.  That is what God is trying to reveal to you and me.  He has given us a hunger for all the things He has prepared for us.  Some of those things are for here in this life, but most are waiting for us when we reign with Him.  We cannot imagine with our human mind all that God has for us, but in the meantime He pours out His blessings on us in the midst of our troubles and trials of this life to help keep our minds on things above.  Life can get so bad down here, but we have this hope like an anchor that holds us firm in every storm we face.
Count Your Blessings
When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

No Turning Back

So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is seen is eternal.  2Corinthians 4:18

I do not know about you, but I am totally exhausted from dragging around the baggage of all my yesterdays.  It doesn’t matter if it’s good or bad thoughts and memories of yesterday, I spend way too much time giving all the shoulda, coulda, and woulda’s.  Every time a thought crosses my mind in no time at all I can start beating myself up on why I did what I did, or how I should have done the whole thing better or differently.

The only good thing that comes from our memory bank is using it to make better choices, but I don’t think that is what very many of us do.  I used to think I was all alone in my self-berating treatment.  But I’m not so sure anymore.  I think that is what the one who seeks to destroy me wants me to think.  He’s very good at using what I think about myself to point out people around me who “appear” to be doing so much better than I am.  Instead of seeing others and being happy about their blessings, I’m berating myself because I know that many of the results I’m living with are not the blessings they seem to be enjoying.

Sometimes I can hear in my head, “See if you had only made better choices 30 years ago you wouldn’t be living with so much shame.”  He takes the truth and twists it like a knife in my heart.  I don’t care how many times I want to turn back and do it all over again, I know that I can’t, but I keep reliving it in my mind over and over. 

Jesus said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.  For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life will save it.”  Luke 9:23 &24

At first interpretation I knew that meant I must accept Christ as my Savior and put on the cross my idea of what my life is.  Gradually God is revealing to me, that the only thing in my past that matters is that I received Him.  All the other stuff needs to be nailed to the cross through His sacrifice.  He knows our humanness and that once is not always enough, “take up their cross daily,” no matter how many times we have to nail our sin, our regrets, our guilt, and our shame to the cross, it’s ok, but if we don’t and we continue to carry them around we are not denying self, instead we waste precious time and energy on the things we cannot change robbing us every opportunity to focus on the things we can influence change.

At this time of year we see a lot of focus on giving and reaching out to others and thanks to social media we see a lot of wonderful things being done in the “Christmas Spirit.”  While it all is well and good, and I envy those who do all those wonderful things, I struggle with what I do or should I say don’t do.  This morning as I got on to myself one more time about not knowing what I can do, He reminded me that prayer is so important and it’s the one thing that we all can do.  You or I may not have the means or access to physically do something, but we all have the means and access to pray.  Our prayers open up the window of opportunity for someone to reach out, for someone to help someone in need. 

We cannot turn back the hands of time and use what we know now to make a better life than we had, to do things the right way, that’s not in God’s plan.  We are given a microscopic amount of time on this earth against the massive expanse of eternity to make a difference.  No one ever did anything great that didn’t begin in prayer.  I’m sorry I haven’t spent more time in prayer.  I’m sorry that I’ve put other things before prayer.  I’m sorry there have been many days I left my cross hanging on the wall and didn’t take it with me through the day.  There is no turning back time, but I can fix my eyes on what I cannot see, and press on toward the prize by start doing what I know to do and let the window of opportunity to do more for the Glory of God.  May starting on our knees before the throne lift us up to do more and more taking up our cross daily following Him.

“…so is My word that goes out from my mouth:   It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.  Isaiah 55:11

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord,  “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.  Then you will call on Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you.  You will seek Me and find Me when you seek me with all you heart.” Jeremiah 29:11-13

In my life I have seen God at work in spite of my sinful nature.  In my latest struggle I cannot see what He is doing, but because of what I know He has done in the past I know that He is doing something that only He can do. 

Last night at dinner with some friends we were talking about family and how her mom and dad moved from Arkansas to California and her oldest sister was born there, they bought a house and settled down to build their life together.  Then family “needed” her dad to come back to help with the family farm.  What appeared to be a want more than a need from the family, just might have been God’s hand things and people into place so that things and people (members of family) could be born.  If they had stayed in California how different life would have been and some people in her family would not have existed at all.

I was reminded of the time God revealed that truth to me as well.  When my oldest son was graduating from Texas A&M University.  As I sat next to the rafters in the basketball arena looking down at a court covered with caps and gowns I was feeling very proud and sad at the same time.  As we waited for the ceremony to begin I was looking at my family sitting all on one row laughing and talking and enjoying the day.  My heart was weary from the shame of being a single mom because of divorce.  An ugly thing that I never ever wanted to have done.  I looked to my left and the seat next to me was empty.  In my thoughts God spoke to my heart and said, "Teresa look back over these 20+ years, every time you went to a ballgame, a play, a concert, or a ceremony anything and everything your child was involved in there was “an empty seat” next to you.  It was not empty because I, (your Husband), your Father, and your closest companion was sitting right there next to you, cheering him and his brothers just like you.  That young man would not be exactly where he is, on that basketball court about to receive a degree from one of the most prestigious universities in the country, in this moment if your life had not gone exactly as it did.

Whether God planned all the things in my life to happen exactly as they did or that He worked everything out that I messed up for the good, I do not know.  That detail is not important to me.  What I learned that day taught me that no matter what God does have a plan whether we mess up or not, He already knows and has everything under control. 

Yesterday I cried out to God in my pain, in my frustration, and in my fear and He led me to acknowledge who He is.  Just as my son was a speck on the floor of that arena with the hundreds of other graduates and from my perspective could barely see Him, we too are just a speck in the grand scheme of things.  Still, we are so important to God that He is all up in every detail of our lives.

I’m here to tell you I do not have a clue as to what is going on or what I’m doing.  Friday I was so emotionally exhausted from the massive struggle to do my job and instead of it getting easier through the weeks when I begin to get a grip on it more obstacles are thrown in the mix.  I confess I have always struggled with the process of things, I really like to know what’s coming and how it’s going to end.  I never know all the details even when it’s over, but at the end such as the moment my son graduated, God gives me a glimpse of what He was doing all along and why.

Jesus told us that even the very hairs of our head are numbered.  (Ok, I just “googled” that thinking surely someone has investigated it) The average number of hairs on a human head, average being a guess, not exact, is from 100,000 to 200,000 hairs.  Jesus said, “Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid.”  Luke 12:7

This means He knows the exact number at any given time of our life how many there are that is a microscopic detail that we don’t even think about until it starts falling out never to grow again.  So why can’t we see that God knows everything else about us and is always at work in us and for us.  We are like a grain of dust in the wind and God not only knows us, He loves us so much He made a plan, an individual life plan for each and every one of us.

Yesterday my heart wanted to cry out in my anguish, my frustration, and my anger, but I couldn’t not that He could not handle my tantrum fit, He could and He would because I had done that the night before. The Comforter came to me yesterday and interceded.  The events of my life once again had brought me to the feet of Jesus and even though I still don’t know what the bigger picture looks like, what the purpose is, or even the outcome, I do know without a doubt that God knows and holds me with all my struggles and problems are in His hand.  If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there you hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.  Psalm 139:9-10


The big picture is not at all about you or me, and our part, though it is the smallest of the small, is crucial to God’s plan, if it were not He would not have placed or moved people and things exactly as they needed to be for us to exist and be a part of the plans that He has for others.  All of it is to the glory and honor and love of God.

It Really is a Gift

For it is by grace you have been saved through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.  Ephesians 2:8-10

To get to who we really are we have to get past what we think we are not or the failures that have become our definition.  We have been conditioned subconsciously by those conditioning us and by our own submission to be conditioned.  We are who we are by culture and unspoken expectations.  Like Pavlov’s dog who became conditioned to be hungry at the sound of a bell.  Things happen to make us perform or to stop at the sound as small as a sigh or the raising of an eyebrow.  We stay in a state of confusion most of the time because we receive so many mixed signals from our family, friends, and co-workers.  Many of us have an ingrained need to be pleasing to everyone in our life.  If one person seems to be disappointed, hurt, and/or mad at us or about us it sends us into a fit of some sort to fix that person’s problem with us.  People-pleasers cannot stand to have anyone upset or have any ill feeling toward their actions, appearance, or speech.

I heard a podcast of Max Lucado a few minutes ago.  He was talking about how we are known by others.  He was making specific notice to how we are guilty of associating a person with his or her past mistakes, failures, or addictions without even really thinking about.  He was pointing out how the world sees us for what we have done or not done even in common everyday conversations… “I saw Suzie at the grocery store, you know Suzie, she just can’t keep a job” …Remember Tom, he had that affair and devastated his wife and family.  Joe the alcoholic... Sometimes I feel like even though it isn’t spoken out loud (at least to me anyway) that people still associate me with my past mistakes and failures.  No matter how hard I try to put it all behind me it just never goes away. 

People who thrive on pleasing others all the time have lost their own self-worth in what other people think of them.  Their first thought in every situation is, “What would people say?”  “What would people think?”  It starts early and takes a very long time to break the cycle.  It spills over into the spiritual life as well.  People-pleasers don’t find freedom in God’s love and mercy, no matter how many times they see it in the Bible they don’t receive those words of grace and mercy are applied to them.  They really believe that what they do and how much they serve is their path to God to gaining His favor, His grace, His mercy, and even more His love. 

Do you know that there is absolutely nothing you can do to earn God’s grace, His mercy, or His love?  It is absolutely and profoundly a GIFT.  It has been the hardest thing for me to receive.  I am of the population of people who struggle with pleasing people.  It worries me what other’s think, I will fret over a mistake or wrong word spoken to someone by accident forever even after all apologies and forgiveness is given, I will still cringe at the thought of doing anything wrong.  I also don’t like it when I don’t get along with someone, when I try in every way to befriend someone and they don’t receive it.  I have transferred all my experiences in people relations to my relationship with God believing that I have to do something to earn His love and favor.

Jesus is the only one who sees me, not my past, not my failures, not my mistakes, not my sins.  He sees me and loves me.  Even I can’t look at myself the way He does.  God poured out His grace and mercy and love through His Son Jesus and there is not one thing you and I can do to earn it…though we try and try and try because we mistakenly believe that because we have to prove our worth to people, we have to prove something to God.

What all any one of us has to do is receive His gift and understand that we are His workmanship, everything good about us whether we know what that good is or not was His gift to us.  The only work required of you and me is to accept the knowledge that God created us and then get rid of the lies that conditioned us to be the neurotic, compulsive disorder we allowed to be conditioned in us through our life.  With that said we are looking at the impossible, right?
Wrong!  Absolutely nothing is impossible with God!  The more we know Him, the more we know His power.  Out of His glorious riches He can strengthen us with power through His Spirit in our inner being.  God works from the inside out.  When we allow Him His power goes to work to reveal all the hidden lies and secrets that we didn’t even know existed, but had a stronghold that guided our every move and that wrong need of having to do something to be pleasing.  This is so that Christ may dwell, He may reside, He may take up room, and stay in us, that He may consume us.  This enables us to be rooted and established in Christ that we no longer have to be pleasing, but we are pleasing through Christ because His actions, thoughts, and words become ours and we move and have our being in Him. 

The weight gets lifted we no longer live in our own strength, but as we learn and accept the never ending love of God is specifically for everyone who will; we become who God planned for us to be.  The old passes away and behold we become new more and more.

Receive the gift, open it up, put it on and take it in to the deepest part of your heart and soul and discover living in Christ!

Finally...Whatever

Finally…Whatever.

Rejoice in the Lord always, I will say it again: Rejoice!  Let your gentleness be evident to all.  The Lord is near.  Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.  Philippians 4:1-7 

Confession:  For years I have complained, whined, and begrudged a lot of things and circumstances in my life.  95% of all this has occurred internally.  Yes I do make some of my complaints verbally to some of my trusted friends and husband…but for the most part they are just those thoughts in the head battling it out for attention with those other raging battles of self-concept and guilt that have always been there.

The other day I heard someone quote “The only way to hold on to God’s blessings is with an open hand.”  Another quote I came across, “The only way to be truly free is to completely die to self and become a slave to Christ.”  Both sound very contradictory and very hard to actually do.  I have experienced some things in my life that make these statements very true.  When God has blessed me with whatever that is, if I took His blessing and wrapped my hand around it in a tight grip and held on to that blessing as fiercely as I could…two things happened, I killed the blessing and made it a curse and I locked the door to God blessing me more.

Grabbing on to something or someone and holding on with all our might is a natural human response.  We instinctively hold on to what we think we want or need.  Sometimes God blesses us with something just to see if that blessing is more important to us than He is…not for Him to see, but to show us where our priorities really are.  Some people say nothing good ever lasts anyway so why not hold on to blessings for as long as you can? 

I think we do not realize that even though good comes and goes, it does keep coming to us but if we are so determined to hold on to the good of yesterday we miss the good and even better that God has for us.  On the other hand if we are so caught up in the bad that comes to us, the trials, the circumstances, the betrayals, the stuff that breaks our hearts and spirits we will definitely miss the blessings of God, and here lies the unexpected blessings we may never see because we get so wrapped up in the disappointment and hurt of the trying times. 

Colossians 1:21 tells us, Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior.  But now He has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in His sight, without blemish and free from accusation.

Now salvation is eternal, but we can still alienate ourselves from God’s blessings by continuing in our selfish human behavior.  But wait, we are human, how else can we possibly behave otherwise?  Through our salvation experience we have been reconciled presented holy in His sight.  Philippians 2:12 tells us that we must continue to work out our salvation with fear and trembling, which means not that we are to be afraid we will lose our salvation, but that it’s going to take work and sometimes a lot of work.  Christianity is not a destination, it’s a process, a continual growing process that we must work at and on.  This is not a job for the faint-hearted, but it is also never ever done alone…Philippians 2:13 says this, For it is God who works in you to will and to act according to His good purpose.

God is right there with you working in you and for you and if you look around He has also made available some other people to come into your life to help you through the tests and trials and victories you experience.  God never said, He would reconcile us to Himself through His Son and then send us out alone.  No, He said, “I will never leave you or forsake you.” He also has surrounded us with people.  Paul’s life is full of people he was constantly acknowledging and thanking for their partnering with him in the faith to carry out the news of Jesus.  God has also placed good and faithful people in your life to do the same, but because we may not be evangelists, preachers, or other similar type servants of God, we don’t really look at the people in our lives like that.

Here is what we must actively do every day, we must always work out whatever is in us that keeps us from God’s presence, from His blessings that are just waiting to be poured out on us, we have to open our hands and open our hearts ready to receive His goodness as well as let them go to make room for more.  So that through whatever life may throw at us through the good and the bad, we can claim the blessings both the obvious ones and the ones hidden in secret places and the darkness of our trials.  Do you know how to do this?  Don’t fret God has some suggestions; here are a few.

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right and of God.  Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.  For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.  When Christ, who is our life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.  Put to death, whatever belongs to your earthly nature…You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived.  But now you must rid yourselves of all such things…and put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.  Colossians 3:1-5, 7, 8, 10.

Finally, …whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.  Whatever your have learned or received or heard from me, (Paul), put it into practice.  And the God of peace will be with you.  Philippians 4:8-9.

Always study and practice what you have learned.  God has already saved you from all the horrors of this life and what you could have become as well of eternal separation from Him, but there is a reason that upon that salvation He didn’t instantly take you to heaven, His plan and your purpose is still being processed, so press on in Jesus name, doing what you do, in your job, in your play, in your family, in your daily lives let the plan of God come out in you and the flood-gates from Heaven will open with more than you could possibly imagine much less hold.

I will give you the treasures of darkness, riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the Lord, the God of Israel, who summons you by name.  Isaiah 45:3

Can you look back over your life without seeing the not so good or even the bad times that you went through?  Can you now see the good that came out of those times?  Did those times change you in any way?  Yes it is hard to see good in bad and yes we all have a tendency to lean toward the cynical or resentful attitude over the bad things we go through.  But those times are the darkness where treasures are hidden, the secret places no one else knows about.

It was many years after some heartbreaking events in my life when I first read this verse.  It’s one thing to have one failed marriage in your history, but to have one more with two more children involved.  Being single and raising four boys was not on my life-plans, but there I was and I cannot say that I found the treasure in the midst of it all.  No during those very dark and scary times, I was very depressed, cynical and resentful.  I couldn't believe all my hopes and dreams were gone.  I was a failure and I took most of the blame on myself, which meant the guilt and shame was multiplied and even heavier.  I would never be a respectable person again.  I had made very poor choices and I asked God’s forgiveness which He immediately gave, but it took me years to give myself permission to forgive me.

When I first read this verse, I really had to search for the treasures that were given to me in those dark times.  I didn't see them at first, the riches in my life were hidden very well in the secret places.  It took time for me to look past the bad to see the good that  God had worked out.  But He constantly put before me those treasures and riches, until I finally recognized them, in fact I am still finding them all the time in all those years ago.

Now I am amazed at just how much I can see treasures in the difficult times that I go through in my present.  The loss of a loved one is a very difficult time, it has its own darkness that David refers to as the shadow in the 23rd Psalm.  Many fear death, it is so secretive and a process that no one knows until experiencing it.  I can’t say that I’m looking forward to the process of death, but I know that I will love the destination.  I don’t understand it, but I know the treasure, I have already found it in the darkness of losing my mother in death recently.  I don’t think I can even explain it, but this time the treasure was immediately given to me in the moment of her death. 

Over my years of struggles with failure and broken marriages, God was teaching very important truths that only come from Him in a working on relationship with Him.  When I was young I dreaded with fear losing my mother in death.  I could not imagine my life without her in it.  But in God’s perfect timing, in His perfect grace and peace, He took my mother out of this world and into His and in that same instant He left a nugget of my mother with me, a treasure that no one can take away or steal.  It’s mine.

People ask me how I’m doing in the days and weeks since my mother died and some are very surprised to hear me say, “I am doing very well!  God has been so good!”  People will say “I’m sorry for your loss.” And my immediate internal response is I am not sorry, I have not lost my mother at all.  I have been given a treasure beyond comparison.  My mother’s body died, but she lives eternal and I feel her presence with me more now than I did when she was still in her physical body.

We may have to look harder in the darkness for the treasures God has for us sometimes, but In my own experiences and trials, I have learned that sometimes the treasure is in the search and sometimes the treasure appears when I open my heart and just let God pour the treasure in.  For all of us the treasure hunt begins like digging in mines, hard and treacherous, but as we learn to depend and trust God in all things, the treasures become more obvious and even crystal clear.
